Founded in 1989 by acclaimed New York sportswriter and author Bill Shannon, the New York Sports Hall of Fame commemorates Greater New York sports history and the Hall’s more than 300 members.

The New York Sports Hall of Fame is owned and operated by New York Sports Experience, whose founder Jordan Sprechman is an original Hall officer. Each New York Sports Experience member is granted Hall voting privileges.

In 2020, the New York Sports Hall of Fame announced that it would prioritize digital commemoration. A large collection of Hall acceptance speeches and other exclusive Hall content reside on the New York Sports Experience streaming service.
